What you need to know about Forklift Training

Do you find it offensive some people think if you didn’t go to college your stupid?

I’m a welder construction worker and have a little college but not a degree of any sort. I have a certificate to practice avionics repair on Helicopters and I’m 23. I was in the army when I got it and when I got out I found out that my loca union hall could give me a job that pays a few dollars more than what an aviation foreman would get payed and it let me take the summer off . So I never went to college for aviation mechanices so meanwhile work got slow and I decided to get a job at temp agency. I had an interview with manpower for a forklift operators job because I am a certified forklift operator and when I was interviewed it was by this lady that had some kind of speech problem that made her head tweak to the left uncontrollably. Honestly I had a hard time not laughing because it seemed so much like a skit of of a movie or something. but anyways when she asked what job I wanted I told her the forklift one . She then went and informed me the job was paying only 8$per hour ! I realized that it was a waste of time so I didn’t really care because I didn’t really need the job since I had money saved up from when I was working and My unemployment insurance pays more than what an 8an hour job would. So I told her “that’s asking allot for just 8$hour” .She seemed shocked which was entertaining to me but she then said well for non skilled workers it’s usually that way. She then informed me if I had any experience or a semi skill that pertained to the job I might be more suited for there job. I was rather disgusted but I promptly told her that I didn’t need the job and walked out and told her she was a waste of time.I make more money than she does and I have no education higher than maybe a 6 month vocation certification and I get by fine. When she said it it’s worth noting that she has a poster that shows a rusted car that says “No education” and the other side it has a pretty red sports car that say “Educated”. I think people like this are very offensive. what do you think? I know that college is a good thing and employers look for it but I don’t think it’s right that someone with a little 2 year associates degree should have there nose in the air and be so smug.

That lady sounds like a tool. But yeah, I know what you mean. I have a degree but my fiance doesn't, and I have always felt that my parents (my dad especially) thinks lower of him just because he never went to school.

My dad pretty much made me go to college right after high school. He's one of those ultra-conservative one-track mind types that think there is only one path everybody's life should take which is, go to school, immediately afterwards go to college and get a degree, get a job/career, then marry someone of the opposite sex, then have kids. Now because of his mindset, he has wasted a buttload of money on a degree that I don't really care for and I am stuck in a career field I don't really care for either. Maybe some people don't want to go to school or they want kids out of wedlock, so what? That kind of thinking pisses me off…and I just realized that I have gone off on a tangent, sorry.

Some people just aren't cut out for college and that's fine if they can make it work. Many people who went to school, just went to get a piece of paper, which makes them no better than someone who didn't go to school. Higher education does make you a better person when you use it to better your own or someone else's life, but that still doesn't give you a right to act like your better than anyone else.

  1. If it makes you feel better, the two year associates degree is like the janitor of the educated class. Not that it’s right to put her down either, but she is definitely in no position to feel superiour because of her education.

I am a strong believer in life long education. I think you should learn because it makes your life better, not to get that red sports car or impress anyone. If fact, it’s likely that higher education can prevent dementia in older people so I would strongly suggest taking courses that interest you, but not to make people think you’re smarter.

I do have a degree, but my husband doesn’t so I know what you’re talking about. Most of my friends are well educated and don’t seem to ever listen to him when he speaks. If we’re having a conversation and he offers his opinion, they all sort of brush it off and ignore him, as if, what could he know? He doesn’t have a piece of paper!

  2. People who think that way are idiots. Some of the brightest people I know have little education. I’ll take a high school dropout with common sense over some of these educated idiots we have teaching in our schools.

  3. College is way over rated…unfortunately, society is of the impression that you will only succeed if you have a degree…don’t buy that line of crap….just think how much more successful Bill Gates would be if he had his degree…yeah, right…..education is what you make of it…I have three degrees….and I have no idea how to burn steel…the question becomes ..how can you take advantage of the skill, knowledge, and talent you have?….everyone has unique skill, knowledge, and talents ..including you…..learn about business…take an accounting course…or a business course…find your nitch market…since you know about steel, you understand the value of recycled steel products…there is your new found business…what about all of the vacated railroad tracks in this country…that is some very valuable steel for the taking (and re-selling)…what about junk cars…how much steel are in those cars…that could be re-cycled and sold

  4. I do think that there is a tendency to make snap judgments many times about a person based on something like their education or their appearance. You could always tell her that Abraham Lincoln didn’t have a college education but George W. Bush did! Sounds like you also made a snap judgment about your interviewer because of her disability

However, I also think you’re getting a little touchy about the subject too. College does enable you to apply for jobs that make more money than jobs that don’t require college. You could think of it this way — with a degree in Architecture you’ll design the skyscraper and make millions of dollars; without the degree, you only get to build the skyscraper for an hourly wage.

Also unemployment will eventually run out. It varies from state to state, but most states will only pay you 26 weeks of unemployment in a 52 week span. If you get the job and do it well, you can move up to a job that pays more and retain the job longer than your unemployment benefits. If you’re on unemployment and applying at Manpower, I doubt you’re making more money than your interviewer

  6. Man , I hate that attitude.

Neither of my 87 year old parents went past 8th grade and they are two of the smartest people I know. Dad spend almost 65 years working in the trucking industry – driving, mechanic, scheduling expediter, owner/operator and owner of a couple of companies. He finally fully retired last year. Mom worked retail most of her life, can add like a calculator and manage money like an accountant/investment banker. Don’t even try to dis my parents’ intelligence!

People who put down service/technical/vocational professionals don’t have a clue how dependent we are for your expertise and how vital your work is to keep our economy healthy. Yeah, the college educated guy may own the helicopter, but who does he call if it isn’t working….YOU!

Who screwed up Wall Street? A bunch of ‘educated’ folks who made a lot of mistakes that their education should have predicted were wrong.

There is a BIG difference between being intelligent and being smart. Sometimes earning a college degree just means a person made it through…it doesn’t neccesarily mean they learned anything.
