What you need to know about Forklift Training

Yale Forklift Pallet Accident Training

We filmed this video where we suspected the top pallet load was unstable. We cleared the whole area and let the forklift operator do his job. As it turned out, the load was broken in several places. Had we unloaded from the top, the breakage risk was very high. Average pallet weight: 900#

  1. It looked pretty …
    It looked pretty screwed to begin with;
But the real death was driving in when it was partially lifted.

I’d have first tried to crush it down level with the right fork in the left side of the pallet and then because it was leaning at the back I would have tilted down as I entered the pallet, and then tilted up all the way before lifting.

If entry looked impossible for the top pallet I’d just SLOWLY bring the whole stack to the ground and let whoever put it up there restack it.

  2. double stack is not …
double stack is not alowed on my job. But I think he took to much time working his forks in. He moved to much…otherwise is better to bring both pallets down at the same time.

  3. from begining he …
from begining he made it wrong I would do this that top pallet wont fall.

  4. Exactly what I …
Exactly what I thought 1337akahunter . He needed to make the pallet level to the ground so that the forks could get in. Now someone has to go up there and hand load the stuff. But….Sh** happens.

  5. could have raised …
could have raised an order picker and hand-unloaded the top pallet first, but his method was faster :)

  6. he should have came …
he should have came from the right side inserted the right fork first lifted the load up a bit and the inserted the other fork!

  7. point of no return …
point of no return at 1:00

  8. no way,,,a cage …
no way,,,a cage would be best

  9. those plastic …
those plastic pallets are the stupidist idea ive ever seen ,,,hence half of them are not suitable for racking,,,

  10. ok never a skid …
ok never a skid with someone on it. more dangerous than this

  11. I could have pulled …
I could have pulled that pallet.
    1. Go under only low side of pallet – LIFT to EVEN – Place 4×4 blocks under pallet side (ie the support section) – set pallet onto blocks.
    2. back out of the now even section.
    3. drive into the now even pallet just like any normal pallet lift.

    Planning saved product.

  12. on a double stack, …
on a double stack, especially a messed up double stack, first of all spread the forklift blades all the way,to reduce tipping, then,ALWAYS,grab the bottom pallet and lower them both always,i deal with this everyday crappy double stacks, also make sure the area is clear of people,or just get another job….

  13. I agree with your …
I agree with your idea But, I drive the stand ups and to lift something that heavy at the corners will just break the skids. The driver did only what he could and that is just let it fall. and first off they shouldnt have put 2 skids on top of each other on a freaken rack. DUMB lol

  14. A comment to those …
A comment to those who might not understand what we were trying to accomplish. We knew in advance that things were going to get ugly. We knew in advance that this was the least ugly way of solving an ugly situation (there is no roof left – hurricane damaged cargo) and we knew in advance that there would be “an accident”. We filmed this to show the safety of the unit, the safety of making sure there were no personnel nearby and also minimizing risk to the driver. Thanks to all

  15. right, if you can’t …
right, if you can’t drive and have all day to play with it.

  16. Holy get this …
Holy get this off that machine.

  17. yup I agree I deal …
yup I agree I deal with this stuff all day too and if you come in at an angle start lifting with the right side fork as you enter and use your side shift no problem this stuff happens with cartons giving way or pallets breaking etc…

  18. Shitty situation, …
ty situation, but I agree with the cherry picker idea, or atleast getting a pallet with someone on it.

  19. no trained operator …
no trained operator would’ve put the stack on the rack in the first place, it was just a training exercise.

  20. I don’t know what a …
I don’t know what a “prat” is but MikeyMike has the right idea.

  21. ive been driving a …
ive been driving a forklift for 3 years now with no formal training (SHUSH) and even i know that you shouldnt do it like that- instead of playing around with it, just go right in from the start angled more from the right- that way you dont even have to do the STUPID IDEA of taking the bottom pallet out!

people like this are the reason that we have so many shipping errors and damaged goods!

  22. Ok, now what the …
Ok, now what the FLT driver really should of done is this, stuck a pallet on his forks, got an agency guy to stand on the pallet and restack it while the FLT driver goes for nice cup of tea… (strong, two sugars)

  23. should’ve came in …
should’ve came in at an angle and picked up the right side first…I deal with this bullshit all day

  24. I would have called …
I would have called someone over with an Order Selector (sometimes called a “cherry picker”) and had him help me restack the top pallet. Pulling out the bottom pallet when it was leaning that far over was the worst thing he could have done. In a worse case scenario it could have brought the whole thing down on his head.

  25. Did he even have a …
Did he even have a plan? The yales arent the best for that anyway, the stand up Raymond would handle that beter in my opinion
