The best reason to train and evaluate all lift truck operators is to improve workplace safety. OSHA created a new regulation (29 CFR 1910.178(l)) that spells out requirements for operator training and evaluation with the intent of reducing the number or forklift accidents. Failure of the employer to comply with the new rules can result in expensive fines and loss of insurance coverage. This can be disastrous to the employer if a serious accident occurs. Learn More

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provide regulations for the safety and health of workers in construction, maritime and general industry. Standard 29 Part 1910 gives a summary of the OSHA General Industry Standards. Subpart D deals with Walking-Working Surfaces that are a chief source of injuries and provides regulations regarding the guarding of floor and wall openings, fixed industrial stairs and ladders, portable wood and metal ladders and safety requirements for scaffolding. Specifications regarding the design and construction requirements of exit routes, emergency and fire prevention plans are outlined under Means of Egress. Other standards include those for Powered Platforms, Manlifts, and Vehicle-Mounted Work Platforms, Occupational Health and Environment Control, Hazardous Materials, Personal Protective Equipment like eye, face, head and respiratory protection, General Environmental Controls like specifications for sanitation and accident prevention signs and tags, Medical and First Aid, specifications for Fire Protection, Compressed Gas and Compressed Air Equipment, Handling and Storage of Materials, Machinery and Machine Guarding, Welding, Cutting and Brazing, Special Industries, and Electrical Safety Requirements. OSHA 10-hour Training for General Industry orients students to OSHA policies, standards and procedures and also acquaints them with the safety and health regulations for General Industry. Topics like Introduction to OSHA, OSH Act, Citations and Inspections, Walking and Working Surfaces, Electrical Safety, Means of Egress and Fire Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Machine Guarding, Hazard Communication, Introduction to Industrial Hygiene and Bloodborne Pathogens and safety and Health Programs are covered in the 10 hour training module. Those desirous of obtaining a comprehensive idea about the OSHA compliance issues should undergo the OSHA 30-hour Training for General Industry. Apart from the topics included in the 10-hour module, it provides an in-depth analysis of issues like, HAZWOPER, Confined Spaces, Lockout/Tagout, Hazardous Materials, Materials Handling, Recordkeeping, Workplace Violence, Basic Safety Orientation, Lead safety in the Workplace, Hazards of Asbestos in the Workplace, Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation in the Workplace, Non-Office Ergonomics, Formaldehyde Awareness, Use of Explosives in the Workplace etc. If required, additional training on some particular hazardous aspects of the job will serve as a bonus.The OSHA 501 Trainer course in OSHA Standards for General Industry is recommended for the workers interested in imparting training in the OSHA 10 or 30-hour General Industry Outreach courses. It emphasizes on acquainting them with the use of visual aids and handouts, and the use of different instructional approaches that enhances understanding and comprehension of OSHA standards. It helps in locating OSHA safety and health standards pertaining to General Industry, using these regulations to reinforce the existing health and safety programs, discovering violations of OSHA standards, like hazardous materials, lockout/tagout, walking and working surfaces etc, and keeping of records. After successfully completing the course, workers become authorized trainers.OSHA 511 specifically emphasizes on the major hazardous areas of the workplace, is guided by the OSHA standards and is recommended as a prerequisite for the OSHA 501. After finishing the course, students are supplied with a 30-hour course completion card. It enables personnel to identify appropriate OSHA standards, general causes of accidents and deaths in hazardous locations, violations of OSHA standards, and abatement methods to deal with them. OSHA 511 is for those workers who will not be conducting the training sessions. Hence Safety Training in the OSHA standards for General Industry is a precursor to the prevention of work-related accidents, injuries and deaths and maintenance of safety and health of workers.

Needlestick injuries and other sharps-related injuries which expose workers to bloodborne pathogens continue to be an important public health concern. In 1991, OSHA issued the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration published the Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens standard in 1991 because of a significant health risk associated with exposure to viruses and other microorganisms that cause bloodborne diseases. Of primary concern are the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses. This standard safeguards employees from occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. OSHA delineates concise measures employers must implement to reduce/eliminate potential bloodborne hazards. OSHA mandates each employer with employees subject to occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens must establish a written Exposure Control Plan designed to eliminate or minimize employee exposure. The Exposure Control Plan shall be reviewed and updated at least annually and whenever necessary to reflect new or modified tasks and procedures which affect occupational exposure and to reflect new or revised employee positions with occupational exposure.Congress passed the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act directing OSHA to revise the bloodborne pathogens standard to establish in greater detail, requirements that compel employers to identify and make use of effective and safer medical devices. That revision was published on Jan. 18, 2001, and became effective April 18, 2001.The revision to OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard added new requirements including additions to the exposure control plan and keeping a sharps injury log. The revision specifies in greater detail the engineering controls, such as safer medical devices, which must be used to reduce or eliminate worker exposure. Furthermore, OSHA requires the employer’s Exposure Control Plan, including an annual review and update to reflect changes in technology that eliminate or reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The employer must: take into account innovations in medical procedure and technological developments that reduce the risk of exposure (e.g., newly available medical devices designed to reduce needlesticks); and document consideration and use of appropriate, commercially-available, and effective safer devices (e.g., describe the devices identified as candidates for use, the method(s) used to evaluate those devices, and justification for the eventual selection).A vital component of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2001 requires each employer who is required to establish an Exposure Control Plan to solicit input from non-managerial employees responsible for direct patient care who are potentially exposed to injuries from contaminated sharps in the identification, evaluation, and selection of effective engineering and work practice controls and shall document the solicitation in the Exposure Control Plan.The 2001 revisions to the bloodborne pathogens standard clearly states that each employer shall establish and maintain a sharps injury log for the recording of percutaneous injuries from contaminated sharps. The information in the sharps injury log shall be recorded and maintained in such manner as to protect the confidentiality of the injured employee. The sharps injury log shall contain, at a minimum:+ The type and brand of device involved in the incident+ The department or work area where the exposure incident occurred+ An explanation of how the incident occurredIt is this author’s opinion that OSHA will continue to monitor leading medical surveillance systems and adopt further controls to reduce or eliminate occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in healthcare environments.For more information on Needlesticks & OSHA feel free to email OSHA Optics, LLC at:Compliance@OSHAOptics.comFor information on OSHA’s mandated annual training requirements for healthcare workers, we encourage you to visit OSHA Optics, LLC’s website at: www.OSHAOptics.comThank you.OSHA Optics, LLC

OSHA regulations are designed to protect workers from hazardous conditions and ensure safe working conditions. These regulations cover issues such as recordkeeping, reporting and posting. Standards 29 CFR outline the various regulations that should be abided by. These include specifications regarding production or disclosure of information or materials, protection of individual privacy and access to records, inspection, citations, and proposed penalties, recording and reporting of occupational injuries and illnesses, administration witness and documentations in private litigations, occupational safety and health standards, rules concerning access to employee medical records, occupational safety and health standards for shipyard equipment, maritime terminals, agriculture, construction and general industry, longshoring, workshops and rehabilitation facilities, gear certification, identification, classification and regulation of carcinogens, procedures for handling of discrimination complaints by employees etc. OSHA compliance ensures a safe and healthy work environment and prevents employers from facing penalties and paying huge fines. The legal backing provided to OSHA makes conformity an integral aspect of all workplaces. It helps you save a lot of money as treatment of injuries and repairing and replacement of equipments is an expensive deal. It enables employees to concentrate on their work and increase productivity by reducing distractions like taking leave from work due to injury. Making it an integral aspect of the work culture ensures maintaining OSHA compliance. Setting a standard before your employees by agreeing, understanding and inculcating OSHA standards as well as introducing a system of rewards will go a long way in making sure that your employees also obey them.OSHA Outreach Training Program is designed to acquaint workers with the fundamentals of occupational safety and health. This program authorizes those who finish a 1-week OSHA trainer course to teach 10 or 30 hour courses in construction or general industry occupational safety and health standards policy. Authorized trainers are supplied with OSHA course completion cards. These courses are provided by the OSHA Training Institute and enable the teachers to train for 4 years before the end of which an update course must be undertaken to renew their authorization. OSHA Training includes 10 and 30-hour training courses for Construction and General Industry, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) training, Environmental Protection courses etc. Voluntary training guidelines have been designed to aid employers in understanding whether a problem in the worksite can be resolved by training, identify whether training is required, outline the objectives and goals of training, formulate learning activities and conduct training, evaluate the effectiveness of training, revise the program periodically to prevent it from becoming obsolete. OSHA certification involves the issuing of course completion cards, by the Department of Labour within 4-6 weeks upon completion of the 10 and 30 hour OSHA Outreach Training programs for both Construction and General Industry. Upon completion of online courses, students can avail of printable certificates. Hence OSHA regulations increase the safety and reliability quotient of workplaces and ensure greater efficiency and productivity of work.

Need to get OSHA certification, but not sure of where to start? As of recent, more states are requiring OSHA training for the construction industry. So how do you know what course you need?
The most commonly requested OSHA course is OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training for the Construction Industry. This is because it is state-mandated. If you are completing construction public work projects in the following 7 states you will have to get your OSHA 10 hour Outreach card:
* Connecticut
* Massachusetts
* Missouri
* Nevada
* New Hampshire
* New York
* Rhode Island
In addition to these state, enrollments have been increasing for other states whose work or contract requires OSHA training, or there has been a safety and health program adopted. States that have seen a recent increase in OSHA 10-hour Construction Course graduates are California, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Texas.
The OSHA 10-hour construction course covers the necessities of OSHA regulatory standards including Fall Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Material Handling and more.
Generally, most workers need either the 10 or 30 hour Outreach card. The 30 hour course gives a more comprehensive view of the OSHA regulations and hazard identification, and includes additional lessons such as OSHA Standards and Inspection Procedures, Recordkeeping, Fire Prevention and more.
Even if you are not required by law, it may be required by your employer or for a future project. Regardless, having an OSHA card is considered an asset and would look good on your resume.
The other main type of OSHA training is the OSHA trainer certification courses. Completion of the trainer courses allows you to teach 10 or 30 hour outreach training. For construction, this is the 500 Trainer course. To qualify, you need to have five years of construction safety experience and have completed the 510 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry course. This course covers the OSHA construction regulations in detail.

So how do you find the training? You can take a classroom course provided by a trainer in your area, as well as enroll in a course provided by OSHA Training Institute Education Centers across the nation. However, online training is more accessible and the best option for those not able to attend a live classroom course. More people are choosing online training to cut travel costs, time off work and because live classroom courses for the required states fill up quickly.
To start, do an online search for either OSHA 10 hour, 30 hour or 510 certification course. Make sure you find a provider that offers OSHA accepted courses. Generally the website will say OSHA accepted, authorized or accredited. USF OSHA offers OSHA accepted 100% online training that is usually lower in price than the live versions. And you can also find coupons online.
Last, remember to call the training provider’s number listed on the website for bulk discounts. If you have multiple sign-ups for your company this can save quite a bit of money. If you’ve registered for the online course, you will generally have 6 months to complete. There is a course trainer available to you for any questions you may have. At the end of the course is a final exam which you have to pass with an 70 or higher in order to get your certificate.
After you complete your training, your OSHA card and/or certificate should be delivered within 10 business days. You may be able to get it sooner if you request and expedite from the provider.
Visit www.usfosha.com for OSHA accepted training online. For a list of construction industry standards, visit http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owastand.display_standard_group?p_toc_level=1&p_part_number=1926

Highly hazardous materials, widely used in modern industry, are an ever present source of potential danger during transportation, storage and use. A number of government departments and agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), each have a role to play in ensuring health and safety enforcement in the US. The DOT regulates transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat). The CPSC oversees hazardous materials that may go into consumer and household goods, while the EPA regulates hazardous materials that are likely to negatively impact the environment.
OSHA is charged with the regulation of hazardous chemicals, to ensure safety in the workplace. Hazardous materials are regulated via the Process Safety Management (PSM) 29 CFR 1910.119 standard. The agency also regulates hazardous waste clean-up operations as well as emergencies arising from hazmat related incidents through OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.120.
This Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard, known in short as HAZWOPER, became effective on March 6, 1990. The HAZWOPER 1910.120 standard encompasses:
* Clean-up operations required by a governmental body, conducted at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
* Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA)
* Voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by the government as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
* Operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted at treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities pursuant to RCRA regulations
* Emergency response operations involving substantial threats involving hazardous substances, without regard to the physical location of these threats
The OSHA standard concerning worker exposure to hazardous materials deals with hazards that workers may be exposed to in the workplace, and is not only oriented differently but is more broad-based than that of the DOT (which is more concerned with Hazmat Transportation). It is interesting to note that even though the 1910.120 HAZWOPER is an OSHA standard, it does not use the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) for hazardous chemicals. In fact the definition derives from the EPA’s Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund).
The HAZWOPER definition, in addition to the CERCLA listed hazardous substances, also includes: certain biological and disease-causing agents, the Department Of Transportation defined hazardous materials, as well as hazardous waste.
The CERCLA Standard incorporates exhaustive guidelines on issues relevant to the safe handling of hazardous materials. It requires detailed written safety and health programs for employees involved in hazardous waste operations. It provides examples of risks that would be relevant, such as situations that are injury threatening, immediate danger to life and health (IDLH), and danger to life and health (IDLH). It also provides examples of threats to environments, oxygen deficient situations etc.
Another important aspect of the OSHA standard is training. The HAZWOPER standard, which deals with hazardous waste operations and emergency response situations, necessarily requires a certain level of skill on the part of employees. OSHA mandated training courses may range from 4 to 40 hours depending upon the nature of the hazards being dealt with. After the initial training, OSHA also requires follow-up / refresher training. Fortunately, there are a number of commercial organizations which provide OSHA training programs, to ensure compliance to OSHA standards.

What is OSHA 10?

OSHA 10 is part of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s plan to provide and maintain a safer work environment. It is a 10 hour training course and certification process for construction and general industries. Some states require that all employees must have a minimum of 10 hours of safety training in order to work on a public construction site.

What States Require OSHA 10 Training?

OSHA Training is required by law in the States of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. It is illegal to work on a public construction site without being OSHA 10 hour certified.

Who Should Get OSHA 10 Certified?

Anybody living in the States listed above should get certified if they plan on working in the construction field. Also, some states require at least one member of each trade to take either the OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 hour course. Some businesses might require their workers to take the 10 hour course to keep their employees safe and to avoid OSHA’s hefty non-compliance penalties. There is no pre-requisite for the training courses, so anybody who wants to raise awareness of work related hazards and injury prevention is encouraged to take the course.

Where Can I Get Certified?

At the moment, there are two ways of getting certified, online and onsite. Online certification is great for small businesses and individuals because it allows the individual to work at their own pace in their own space. However larger businesses might like the quick and cost effective onsite fleet training option. Onsite training allows for a single instructor to train an entire workforce or a large group of individuals in a single or double sitting.

For more information on OSHA 10 training visit osha.gov

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), under the aegis of the United States Department of Labor, attempts to curb work related injuries, illnesses and deaths by imposing rules to ensure safety and health. Many workplaces in the private sector are covered by the federal regulations of the OSHA. States can develop approved plans if they include employees of the public sector and provide protection corresponding with the Federal OSHA regulations. The OSHA Training Institute provides training in Occupational Safety and Health to federal and state agencies, as well as those in the private sector.

OSHA Training is broken into two modules- 10-hour or 30-hour courses for construction or general industry. OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training program is appropriate for employees of Construction or General Industry and helps them ensure safety and health standards. OSHA 30-hour Outreach Training program also comprises topics related to regulations covered by Standard 29 CFR 1926 like implementation of preventive measures for workplace related accidents and so on. Effective safety training programs help to reduce accidents, illnesses, injuries, fatalities, other damages to health and property, need for legal aid, compensation, and frustration caused due to inability to work.

OSHA 10-hour training helps employers train their employees and make them aware of the fundamental principles of identifying, reducing and reporting work related hazards. OSHA 10-hour Construction Outreach Training program is proposed for foremen, construction workers, job supervisors and others working in the construction industry for occupational safety and health of workers covered by OSHA 29 CFR 1926. If and when required by OSHA standards, workers should receive additional training in the particular hazards of the job. OSHA 10-hour General Industry Outreach Training program is designed for supervisors burdened with the safety and health of the employees. Its objectives are to state the functions of the OSH Act and functions, inspection priorities, and inspection process of OSHA, rights and responsibilities of employers and employees, requirements for proper aisle and passageway maintenance, guidelines for identification and maintenance of floor opening, to understand the importance of effective egress fire protection program, general requirements for general safety standards, and guidelines and requirements for special purpose equipments.

OSHA 30-hour Construction Outreach Training program attempts to identify OSHA’s standards corresponding to specific hazardous conditions and practices, identify the aspects of 1926 subpart C, enforce preventive measures for accidents in workplace, describe the types of personal protective equipments, requirements for fire protection, identify the types of rigging equipments for employees’ protection, identify common electrical hazards, welding and cutting hazards, importance of scaffolding, protection of workers and equipments from dangerous falls, in excavation sites, concrete and masonry jobs, and from explosive and blasting agents, as well as from hazards associated with confined spaces. The General Industry Training program also gives comprehensive information on compliance issues.

Ensuring environmental safety and providing training for it are integral aspects of OSHA Training. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strives to protect health by controlling chemicals and guarding the environment. Protection of air, water, land, endangered species, and management of hazardous waste are its main concerns. This entails fostering energy efficiency, fuel economy, maintaining air quality, prevention of air and oil pollution, and ensuring the supply of safe drinking water.

Hence OSHA has brought about enormous changes in regulation and protection of health and property in the occupational sector. Its very existence indicates that attempts will be made to ensure safety and health of both man and environment.
