Familiarization for operators is listed in three component parts in Section 8.5.3 of the ANSI/SIA A92.3, A92.5 and A92.6 Standards:

“ Familiarization. When an operator is directed to operate an aerial platform he/she isnot familiar with, the operator shall receive instructions regarding the following items:

1. The location of the weather resistant compartment (for manual storage). It is the responsibility of the operator to ensure that the correct manuals are in fact onboard the unit as required by Section 8.2 of the ANSI/SIA A92 Standards and that he/she be familiar with the manuals and reference them as required in Section 8.2.1.

2. The purpose and function of all controls.

3. Safety devices and operating characteristics specific to the aerial platform.”The user of the equipment shall ensure that the operator is familiar with the pieceof equipment he/she is directed to operate. Familiarization must be facilitated by a

The chart below outlines how each form of training prepares an operator to operate different categories of equipment:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provide regulations for the safety and health of workers in construction, maritime and general industry. Standard 29 Part 1910 gives a summary of the OSHA General Industry Standards. Subpart D deals with Walking-Working Surfaces that are a chief source of injuries and provides regulations regarding the guarding of floor and wall openings, fixed industrial stairs and ladders, portable wood and metal ladders and safety requirements for scaffolding. Specifications regarding the design and construction requirements of exit routes, emergency and fire prevention plans are outlined under Means of Egress. Other standards include those for Powered Platforms, Manlifts, and Vehicle-Mounted Work Platforms, Occupational Health and Environment Control, Hazardous Materials, Personal Protective Equipment like eye, face, head and respiratory protection, General Environmental Controls like specifications for sanitation and accident prevention signs and tags, Medical and First Aid, specifications for Fire Protection, Compressed Gas and Compressed Air Equipment, Handling and Storage of Materials, Machinery and Machine Guarding, Welding, Cutting and Brazing, Special Industries, and Electrical Safety Requirements. OSHA 10-hour Training for General Industry orients students to OSHA policies, standards and procedures and also acquaints them with the safety and health regulations for General Industry. Topics like Introduction to OSHA, OSH Act, Citations and Inspections, Walking and Working Surfaces, Electrical Safety, Means of Egress and Fire Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Machine Guarding, Hazard Communication, Introduction to Industrial Hygiene and Bloodborne Pathogens and safety and Health Programs are covered in the 10 hour training module. Those desirous of obtaining a comprehensive idea about the OSHA compliance issues should undergo the OSHA 30-hour Training for General Industry. Apart from the topics included in the 10-hour module, it provides an in-depth analysis of issues like, HAZWOPER, Confined Spaces, Lockout/Tagout, Hazardous Materials, Materials Handling, Recordkeeping, Workplace Violence, Basic Safety Orientation, Lead safety in the Workplace, Hazards of Asbestos in the Workplace, Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation in the Workplace, Non-Office Ergonomics, Formaldehyde Awareness, Use of Explosives in the Workplace etc. If required, additional training on some particular hazardous aspects of the job will serve as a bonus. The OSHA 501 Trainer course in OSHA Standards for General Industry is recommended for the workers interested in imparting training in the OSHA 10 or 30-hour General Industry Outreach courses. It emphasizes on acquainting them with the use of visual aids and handouts, and the use of different instructional approaches that enhances understanding and comprehension of OSHA standards. It helps in locating OSHA safety and health standards pertaining to General Industry, using these regulations to reinforce the existing health and safety programs, discovering violations of OSHA standards, like hazardous materials, lockout/tagout, walking and working surfaces etc, and keeping of records. After successfully completing the course, workers become authorized trainers.OSHA 511 specifically emphasizes on the major hazardous areas of the workplace, is guided by the OSHA standards and is recommended as a prerequisite for the OSHA 501. After finishing the course, students are supplied with a 30-hour course completion card. It enables personnel to identify appropriate OSHA standards, general causes of accidents and deaths in hazardous locations, violations of OSHA standards, and abatement methods to deal with them. OSHA 511 is for those workers who will not be conducting the training sessions. Hence Safety Training in the OSHA standards for General Industry is a precursor to the prevention of work-related accidents, injuries and deaths and maintenance of safety and health of workers.

Forklift accidents continue to occur with alarming regularity. Yet, in many manufacturing worksites, forklift trucks are an indispensable piece of material handling equipment. Their versatility enables workers to do a variety of tasks like lifting, moving, stacking, and loading materials. However, if the forklift operator is not certified, cautious, and alert, the operator, the forklift, the load, pedestrians or structures could be harmed or damaged.

Forklifts are as tricky as they are useful. They can be dangerous, if they’re not operated by certified workers who are familiar with the equipment and know the rules of safety. Driving a forklift truck is different from driving most other vehicles. To drive a forklift safely, operators have to understand the risks and know what to do to avoid accidents. The greatest danger of forklift handling is that it might tip over; collide with a person, vehicle or other equipment; fall off a landing; or drop a load.

In California, employers who use forklifts and other industrial trucks at their worksite, (except certain agricultural operations), must provide training for their industrial truck operators before they may operate the trucks independently. The employer must develop the training program or hire an outside consultant who has the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and to evaluate their competence. Training must be based on the trainee’s prior knowledge and skill, types of powered industrial trucks used in the workplace, specific hazards in the workplace, and the trainee’s demonstrated ability to operate a powered industrial truck safely.

The training must include a combination of formal instruction (lectures, videos, etc.) and practical demonstrations by the trainee in vehicle operation including warnings and precautions; inspections and maintenance; and other unique or hazardous workplace conditions that could affect safe forklift operation. An evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace must also be done. A trainee may only operate the powered industrial truck under the direct supervision of persons who have knowledge, training, and experience to train operators and evaluate their competence.

Forklift training is so important that once is not enough. Employers must make an initial performance evaluation of their industrial truck operators, with periodic evaluations (at least once every three years) to ensure that their skills remain at a high level. And, whenever there is a demonstrated need for it, refresher training must be conducted.

Forklifts are complicated machines that have become a necessary tool for the materials handling industry. As forklifts become more and more prevalent, the need for increased forklift safety grows.

Forklift safety is often neglected because once we get behind the wheel, we forget that it is not a toy. This may sound silly, but it’s one of the most common mistakes when using a forklift. You don’t want one of your workers to injure himself because he was racing forklifts with a co-worker in the warehouse. Not only does this kind of lax mentality about forklift safety put you and your workers at risk, but it also puts your expensive equipment and supplies at risk. From both a liability perspective and a financial perspective, it is advantageous for you to implement forklift safety into your workplace training.

Below is a list of safety precautions that need to be taken when using a forklift. The list is by no means definitive, but it should act as a guide for you to build off of when implementing or reconsidering your forklift safety program.

1. Set Up A Forklift Training Program

If you don’t have the resources to set up a forklift safety program in-house, make sure to have specialists come in and train your workers. You can also look into having your workers enroll in independent forklift classes. Any of the costs you incur setting up a training program will be worth it in the long run because maintaining a safe, and efficient warehouse is invaluable.

2. Do Not Play With The Forklift

This can’t be overemphasized. As I mention above, one of the fundamental problems teaching forklift safety is changing the mentality of your workers. You must not treat the forklift as a toy.

3. Make Sure Forklift Operator Is Mentally and Physically Fit

Many forklift accidents occur because the forklift operator was tired or sick. You need to make sure that your forklift operators understand that it is okay to let you know if they feel too sick or too tired to properly operate the forklift. It is not worth it to let someone who isn’t mentally or physically fit put himself, your workers, and your company at risk.

4. Keep Your Forklift Properly Maintained

This is another one that is often overlooked. Make sure to keep tabs on your regular forklift maintenance and repairs. While the repairs will cost you in the short term, they will be well worth it in the long run because it will help keep the forklift running smoothly and keep your warehouse safe.

5. Gather Feedback From Forklift Operators

Make sure to stay in touch with your forklift operators and listen to their concerns. They most likely have witnessed some questionable or dangerous warehouse conditions. Even if they haven’t, they certainly can still provide valuable input into what needs to be covered in a forklift safety program.

For example, in 2007, she initiated an environmentally friendly fire extinguisher training program. Ms. McFarlane has also worked with Ontario legislators to see to it that workplace violence be considered an occupational hazard.
