Familiarization for operators is listed in three component parts in Section 8.5.3 of the ANSI/SIA A92.3, A92.5 and A92.6 Standards:

“ Familiarization. When an operator is directed to operate an aerial platform he/she isnot familiar with, the operator shall receive instructions regarding the following items:

1. The location of the weather resistant compartment (for manual storage).It is the responsibility of the operator to ensure that the correct manuals are in fact onboard the unit as required by Section 8.2 of the ANSI/SIA A92 Standards and that he/she be familiar with the manuals and reference them as required in Section 8.2.1.

2. The purpose and function of all controls.

3. Safety devices and operating characteristics specific to the aerial platform.”The user of the equipment shall ensure that the operator is familiar with the pieceof equipment he/she is directed to operate. Familiarization must be facilitated by a

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provide regulations for the safety and health of workers in construction, maritime and general industry. Standard 29 Part 1910 gives a summary of the OSHA General Industry Standards. Subpart D deals with Walking-Working Surfaces that are a chief source of injuries and provides regulations regarding the guarding of floor and wall openings, fixed industrial stairs and ladders, portable wood and metal ladders and safety requirements for scaffolding. Specifications regarding the design and construction requirements of exit routes, emergency and fire prevention plans are outlined under Means of Egress. Other standards include those for Powered Platforms, Manlifts, and Vehicle-Mounted Work Platforms, Occupational Health and Environment Control, Hazardous Materials, Personal Protective Equipment like eye, face, head and respiratory protection, General Environmental Controls like specifications for sanitation and accident prevention signs and tags, Medical and First Aid, specifications for Fire Protection, Compressed Gas and Compressed Air Equipment, Handling and Storage of Materials, Machinery and Machine Guarding, Welding, Cutting and Brazing, Special Industries, and Electrical Safety Requirements. OSHA 10-hour Training for General Industry orients students to OSHA policies, standards and procedures and also acquaints them with the safety and health regulations for General Industry. Topics like Introduction to OSHA, OSH Act, Citations and Inspections, Walking and Working Surfaces, Electrical Safety, Means of Egress and Fire Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Machine Guarding, Hazard Communication, Introduction to Industrial Hygiene and Bloodborne Pathogens and safety and Health Programs are covered in the 10 hour training module. Those desirous of obtaining a comprehensive idea about the OSHA compliance issues should undergo the OSHA 30-hour Training for General Industry. Apart from the topics included in the 10-hour module, it provides an in-depth analysis of issues like, HAZWOPER, Confined Spaces, Lockout/Tagout, Hazardous Materials, Materials Handling, Recordkeeping, Workplace Violence, Basic Safety Orientation, Lead safety in the Workplace, Hazards of Asbestos in the Workplace, Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation in the Workplace, Non-Office Ergonomics, Formaldehyde Awareness, Use of Explosives in the Workplace etc. If required, additional training on some particular hazardous aspects of the job will serve as a bonus.The OSHA 501 Trainer course in OSHA Standards for General Industry is recommended for the workers interested in imparting training in the OSHA 10 or 30-hour General Industry Outreach courses. It emphasizes on acquainting them with the use of visual aids and handouts, and the use of different instructional approaches that enhances understanding and comprehension of OSHA standards. It helps in locating OSHA safety and health standards pertaining to General Industry, using these regulations to reinforce the existing health and safety programs, discovering violations of OSHA standards, like hazardous materials, lockout/tagout, walking and working surfaces etc, and keeping of records. After successfully completing the course, workers become authorized trainers.OSHA 511 specifically emphasizes on the major hazardous areas of the workplace, is guided by the OSHA standards and is recommended as a prerequisite for the OSHA 501. After finishing the course, students are supplied with a 30-hour course completion card. It enables personnel to identify appropriate OSHA standards, general causes of accidents and deaths in hazardous locations, violations of OSHA standards, and abatement methods to deal with them. OSHA 511 is for those workers who will not be conducting the training sessions. Hence Safety Training in the OSHA standards for General Industry is a precursor to the prevention of work-related accidents, injuries and deaths and maintenance of safety and health of workers.

Machinery such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, forklifts etc that are used for construction are considered as heavy equipment. Since they are large in size are use for heavy-duty work, those who operate the must be adequately trained and be highly skilled. Those who handle these are called heavy equipment operators.
Heavy equipment operators generally specialize in equipment like bulldozers, backhoes, graders, cranes, etc. They repair, operate, maintain, and adjust these machines. They need to learn about the mechanism of various types of gear like pedals, levers, switches, hydraulic controls, turn dials, and various other devices that are present in equipment.
The work of the heavy equipment operator includes the handling of mining equipment, excavation equipment, and material handling equipment, or road construction equipment to excavate, grade and landscape the earth, or to transport workers, materials and equipment. Like other professions, this career requires a certain level of education and training in special schools.
If you are interested in getting trained by enrolling into a heavy equipment training program, there are a variety of advanced levels of certificate programs provided by the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (NAHETS). These are the most comprehensive and innovative career programs designed for people who are interested in this field as a career. These programs offer fully accredited equipment career training for both new and veteran operators. After being certified, there are many job opportunities available in various industries like highway contractors, grading contractors, road contractors, housing development contractors, etc.
Many websites too offer some of the best on-line heavy equipment career training programs. The curriculum of the career training programs provide an overview to the heavy equipment industry, and train operators on the basic and advanced mechanisms involved in HE operations. The training is chiefly targeted at candidates looking for entry-level jobs. Many of the heavy equipment operator training courses are offered throughout the academic year, and can be taken to upgrade current skills, or fulfill degree and certificate requirements
Specialized training is also offered for a number of types of equipment. These include dump truck, tractor, scraper, wheel loader etc. Candidates learn how to safely and efficiently operate and maintain bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, wheel loaders, skid steers, forklifts, and so on. These training programs include acquiring expertise and knowledge in the basic operations of the equipments, as well as the safety precautions the operator must take. First aid certification is also given to the students. The duration of these programs are from 4 to 10 weeks, at the end of which the completion certification is awarded to the candidates.
After completing the course successfully, candidates will have the academic preparation and practical training required for jobs that can pay anywhere from $10 to $25, depending on the level of experience, expertise, and the employer.
According to the 2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the demand for construction equipment operators is expected to remain high right through to the year 2014. The handbook also reports that the average salary of construction equipment operators will be $17.00 per hour, but that highly skilled and experienced operators can earn over $29.34 per hour.

Need to get OSHA certification, but not sure of where to start? As of recent, more states are requiring OSHA training for the construction industry. So how do you know what course you need?
The most commonly requested OSHA course is OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training for the Construction Industry. This is because it is state-mandated. If you are completing construction public work projects in the following 7 states you will have to get your OSHA 10 hour Outreach card:
* Connecticut
* Massachusetts
* Missouri
* Nevada
* New Hampshire
* New York
* Rhode Island
In addition to these state, enrollments have been increasing for other states whose work or contract requires OSHA training, or there has been a safety and health program adopted. States that have seen a recent increase in OSHA 10-hour Construction Course graduates are California, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Texas.
The OSHA 10-hour construction course covers the necessities of OSHA regulatory standards including Fall Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Material Handling and more.
Generally, most workers need either the 10 or 30 hour Outreach card. The 30 hour course gives a more comprehensive view of the OSHA regulations and hazard identification, and includes additional lessons such as OSHA Standards and Inspection Procedures, Recordkeeping, Fire Prevention and more.
Even if you are not required by law, it may be required by your employer or for a future project. Regardless, having an OSHA card is considered an asset and would look good on your resume.
The other main type of OSHA training is the OSHA trainer certification courses. Completion of the trainer courses allows you to teach 10 or 30 hour outreach training. For construction, this is the 500 Trainer course. To qualify, you need to have five years of construction safety experience and have completed the 510 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry course. This course covers the OSHA construction regulations in detail.

So how do you find the training? You can take a classroom course provided by a trainer in your area, as well as enroll in a course provided by OSHA Training Institute Education Centers across the nation. However, online training is more accessible and the best option for those not able to attend a live classroom course. More people are choosing online training to cut travel costs, time off work and because live classroom courses for the required states fill up quickly.
To start, do an online search for either OSHA 10 hour, 30 hour or 510 certification course. Make sure you find a provider that offers OSHA accepted courses. Generally the website will say OSHA accepted, authorized or accredited. USF OSHA offers OSHA accepted 100% online training that is usually lower in price than the live versions. And you can also find coupons online.
Last, remember to call the training provider’s number listed on the website for bulk discounts. If you have multiple sign-ups for your company this can save quite a bit of money. If you’ve registered for the online course, you will generally have 6 months to complete. There is a course trainer available to you for any questions you may have. At the end of the course is a final exam which you have to pass with an 70 or higher in order to get your certificate.
After you complete your training, your OSHA card and/or certificate should be delivered within 10 business days. You may be able to get it sooner if you request and expedite from the provider.
Visit www.usfosha.com for OSHA accepted training online. For a list of construction industry standards, visit http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owastand.display_standard_group?p_toc_level=1&p_part_number=1926

There’s a reason for calling heavy equipment ‘heavy’. These include machinery like the backhoe, bulldozer, forklifts, excavators, tractor and skid steer. Many of these machines are huge, which means that they need to be controlled precisely and with care. Also, many machines are computer controlled and require specialized training. It is also true that heavy equipment operators may find themselves in a life threatening situation, where either they or somebody else require immediate medical aid.

Heavy equipment operation becomes a job in demand when construction and developmental activities pick up momentum. Heavy equipment operators are required in the construction of roads and buildings, excavation activities, mining, plumbing and electrical activities, landscaping and other such activities. Although the number of heavy equipment operators came down at the time of the recession (when all engineering work came to a standstill), things are looking up now. As the government speeds up spending on infrastructural activities and other construction activities increase in volume, heavy engine operators are once more in demand.

Heavy equipment operators have the responsibility of using a number of machines on the job. Therefore, they need to have a cornucopia of skills. For instance, piling operators have to use machines to hammer pylons into the earth. Machines that pave concrete will need to wet the concrete and lay it on clean surfaces to create flooring and pavements. To do this kind of work, machine operators have to learn heavy equipment operation from a reputed school.

Before you can join for heavy equipment operation training in a training school, you will need at least a high school diploma and a driver’s license. The curriculum in reputed schools is accredited by nationally recognized organizations. Generally, students begin their training on lighter machines. Students begin training under qualified heavy equipment operators. They begin training with light vehicles and move up to heavy equipment and machines.

One of the important things to look out for while selecting a training school to learn heavy equipment operation is their placement program. A school that has a history of placing their students in jobs is preferable as they will give you that much coveted initial break in the industry. Once you pick up some experience, you can always move to a better place or position. But, the first job may be somewhat difficult if the training school does nothing to secure placement.

Some vocational schools do offer heavy equipment training. However, it is important to check out their reputation before you enroll as these schools may not have the personnel, the space and the equipment to impart quality education.
